A rare circa 1715 French or Italian silk bizarre brocade in shades of raspberry with silver gilt metallic flowers and branches on a surface of zigzag geometric patterned ground. Edged in an 18th century silk and silver geometric metallic galon and 19th century eyelash fringe trim all on rich pewter gray silk velvet.
During the period of time that “bizarre” fabrics were produced France was the undisputed leader of fashion. Unfortunately, due to Louis XIV’s wars unemployment and religious persecution drove many of the weavers into exile to other countries for work. This is why “bizarre” patterns are indifferently classified as French or Italian since it’s virtually impossible to tell which country produced them.
