Description: A rare pair of 18th century, circa 1780, Neoclassical hand carved Italian candlesticks with original gesso with silver leaf (either pure or sterling) and gold gilt wood, unusual to find both colors. These were made for a church so the backsides of these candlesticks were left unadorned in order for the church to save money since you never saw the backs. Decorated as an urn with lobes on a base with bun feet, tin Bobeche with leaves and pricket for the candle. Gilt wood is wood that has gold leaf or gold paint applied to it, a process known as gilding. Most gold leaf should be at least 23 karats, mixed with small amounts of copper and silver.

Condition: They have weathered antique patina brought on by age and time that only solidifies to their age. Please be sure to look at the photos for full condition.
