Pair of 18th century brass repoussé flame shields/reflectors from Belgium. Pierced foliate relief plaque that would permit light to pass through them with a single pricket at one end, hand-forged iron armature behind for structure. These would have attached to a stand with the pricket found at the bottom of the shield.
Repoussé was achieved by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. Flame shields were popularized in the 17th century and were strategically placed to shield ladies from the heat of candle flames.

CONDITION

A quarter inch tip at the top of one shield is broken off. The brass has acquired a desirable patina from age.
