An early to mid-17th century Spanish or Italian vestment runner of silk, gold and silver thread embroidery with small metal paillettes, a forerunner to sequins, throughout, edged with its original woven thick metal trim. The embroidery section has a join right in the middle indicating that these were two separate pieces from one item, more than likely an Orphrey panel from a cope. The band itself is on its original red/wine silk velvet, the overall band has been applied to 18th century silk velvet and edged out with an even later, 19th century, galon trim, each end is finished off with a metal fringe. Lined with a silk/satin backing, circa 1650.

Condition: The embroidered band is quite heavy for the silk velvet it has been placed on hence the silk velvet has a couple of very small stress points that can be seen in picture #2 lower left corner area, best for keeping flat. A twelve-inch part of the trim has come loose.
