An 18th century stamped silk velvet Dalmatic from Italy in a rare burnt orange/gold color. The design has motifs of scales, snakes and flowers stamped into both the front and back center panels and sleeves. Totally hand sewn, trim out with 18th and 19th century metallic trims and has a waxed cotton lining. (Mannequin not included)

Stamping was used in the creation of decorative patterns on the pile of the velvet since no other ornament was needed making it very economical. The pile of solid-colored velvet is crushed with hot metal matrices leaving the desired pattern on the velvet. This is a type of velvet has been manufactured since the sixteenth century and is quite popular even today

Condition: Small bit of rub to some of the front velvet, mainly from use, one piece of trim on the sleeve is coming loose and the outer 19th century trim around the back edge is a replacement.
