| France, possibly
Lyons, 1730’s
Typically made from dress material after it did service
as a gown this cover is made from two widths of material sewn together.
The pattern of urns woven in silver metal threads with large sprays
of flowers in red, blue, green, pink and yellow on an ivory ground.
The weave is lampas with an ivory ground of ribbed tabby with a geometric
design. Bordered on all four sides with the same period of gold metal
tape with an intertwining scroll motif. Backed with salmon colored striped
tone-on-tone silk fabric.
The large flowers and leaves in this piece show a form
of color-shading or hatching, parallel to the contours of the motifs,
which was particularly favored between 1730 and 1735.
Condition: Minor abraded areas to the ground and silver
metal thread on the front. The metal tape has tarnished from age. The
silk lining on the backside has one split about 6” long, several
tiny holes, some fading and a spot but none of these problems come to
the front.
Antique textiles will often have
spots, marks, fray, rub and other age related signs of wear since quite
often pieces such as this started life as a dress that was worn. Antique
fabrics are old passing through centuries and are delicate and show
signs of aging. While we make every effort to offer mint or near mint
items they will not look brand new or be in pristine condition.
