A
late 17th, early 18th century Beauvais tapestry fragment that more than
likely came
from a border from a larger tapestry. Beauvais, a northern town in France,
was
established in 1664 and wove tapestries for the wealthy bourgeoisie
and nobility of
France, as well as for export. This fragment depicts a Grecian clad
woman surrounded
by a grotesque mask, fish, mirrors and shell. Finely woven in silk and
wool threads that
still retain their bright color, lightly padded and framed in a newer
gilt frame.
