rare French 18th century toile de jouy bed hanging set depicting Moses
in the Bulrushes. Vegetable dyed in an eggplant color that has changed to sepia in color, and printed with a copperplate on a cotton ground, there are six pieces that have been hand quilted onto its original hand woven linen backing. Favre, Petitpierre and company, 1800, inscription S. Cholet Nantes, manufactured this toile. The print is a precise copy of two paintings by Nicolas Poussin, 1594 - 1665. In the upper section, though the scene is reversed, "Moïse sauvé des eaux" or "Moses is saved", painted in 1647 and forming part of the Louise XIV collection in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The lower section "Floating on the Water", painted in 1654 is now part of the Orleans collection at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England. |
