Antique Decorative Pillows and Textiles
Italian 1920's Mariano Fortuny Pomegranate Hanging panel

The Italian textile industry was not derived from a tradition of popular weaving but was created specifically to
meet the demands of a market of elite consumers. The pomegranate - a textile pattern considered a status
symbol in the Renaissance period - predominated in textile production because of its appeal to upper-class
taste. This pattern persisted in many variations for well over a century. The pomegranate design was introduced
from the Middle East through trade between Italy and the Turkish empire and became the principle pattern in
Italian textile production during the Renaissance period. The most costly textiles had pomegranate patterns and
were reserved for court or religious ceremonies. The pomegranate, which signified immortality and fertility in
Eastern religions, was absorbed into Christian symbolism. Mariano Fortuny frequently pulled patterns from the
Renaissance period both for their meaning and decorative effect.
