A late 16th early
17th century Italian appliqué panel with a ground of crimson silk
velvet with applied
stylized flames made from cloth of gold and outlined with metal thread.
Bordered across the top and sides
with a period gold metallic tape that has aged to a copper patina and
edged along the bottom with a 3”
eyelash fringe trim with caterpillars, backed with period linen burlap.
Condition: As pictured you can see some dirty spots
but these have a tendency to show up more in
pictures then what they look like in person. A 2” replace piece
of fringe at one end and in general shows
its age that is typical of apiece over 300 years old, we like to call
it patina.
Cloth of gold is a fabric woven
with a gold wrapped or spun weft, referred to as a “spirally spun
gold
strip”. The core yarn is silk wrapped with a band or strip of
high content gold filé.
