A
rare and stunning circa 1840 French pink dyed shagreen necessaire with
a
rhinestone swan on top. The inside is lined with pink velvet with five
sewing
implements, thimble, scissors, stiletto, needle case and bodkin that
are all gold
gilt and lightly decorated with small florets. Marked on the top inside
lid with Saint Apes, 550 Rue St. Monore. The needle case has three indistinguishable
marks. Condition: The opening hinge is slightly bent but still works
perfectly.
Slight wear as pictured overall in amazing condition.
Shagreen: The very
fine grain or 'scale' of the old stingray leather (shagreen is
stingray or shark skin) is consistent with the very fine belly of the
beast, and
represents the finest quality of early shagreen. |
