Circa 1650 pair
of French tapestry pillows depicting the Greek God Bacchus, the God of
wine and ecstasy,
and his wife Ariadne. The story goes, Bacchus, also know as Dionysus,
found Ariadne sleeping on Naxos, a
Greek island, after being abandoned by Theseus and married her. Both tapestries
are finely woven in silk
and wool, edged with an 18th century ochre silk and metal wire galon all
on taupe silk velvet. Hand
finished with 19th century gold metallic cording that has developed a
rich deep dark patina. Condition:
Ancient restorations, typical of textiles 350+ years old, nice bright
colors.
