A pair of antique,
circa 1900, French cut and voided silk velvet pillows of a Genoese, Italian
16th century
design. This pair shows a voided pattern of blue/gray silk velvet pile
with a pattern of leaves and foliage on
a flat ground of tan silk that’s farther enhanced with a design
of palmettes, artichokes and garlands
woven in cream colored silk. Backed with vanilla colored silk velvet,
trimmed with a gold metallic hand
tied fringe trim from Milan, Italy. Excellent clean condition.
Voided velvet: when areas of the ground are left free
of pile. Since projecting pile-required quantities of silk
thread, voided velvet was less expensive to manufacture than solid-pile
velvet or brocaded velvet.
