Pair of Fortuny
early 1920’s fabric with his signature pomegranate design inspired
by a 15th century
Italian silk velvet. A ground of deep forest green with hints of blue
and an overlay of gold metallic
depicting artichokes and pomegranates. Backed with deep taupe designer
silk velvet, finished with a
metallic gold cording that has developed a deep dark rich patina.
The pomegranate was the Christian symbol of the Resurrection
and represented the chastity of the Virgin
Mary. The association is derived from the fact that the pomegranate
is a fruit composed almost entirely of
seeds and was thought to reproduce itself prodigiously. It also became
the impresa of members of the
Spanish Royal House including the emblem of Catharine of Aragon, the
first wife of Henry the VIII.
Condition: The metallic has faded
over time, common due to oxidization but still retains the full design
otherwise clean and ready to grace your home.
